O’Neill And Bardsley Speak

Martin O’Neill and Phil Bardsley have both spoken this afternoon about his loan signing.

As we reported earlier, the 21-year-old right back has signed until the end of the season and will be free to make his debut against Watford at Villa Park on the 20th of January.

O’Neill said:

‘I think he’s very hungry to do well in the Premiership. He just wants that opportunity. Of course at Manchester United there’s the small matter of trying to get past Gary Neville in that position or any other position along the back-four. So he has the opportunity now to come and fight for his place in the team. I think he’s prepared to do that. Nothing is cut and dried for him, but he’s one of those who’s not had everything easy and he wants to battle.’

Adding, on the official site: ‘Anyone who’s had their football schooling at Manchester United possesses quality, but it’s really his attitude that’s absolutely top-class and that’s a big plus for us. We’ve got a lot of important games coming up and he’s got from now until the end of May to try and prove himself.’

Does that mean a permanent deal could be offered if he does or will Manchester United want him back?

O’Neill finished by saying they all want to get the Villa back up the league and ‘We want to try to get other players if we can between now and the end of January and have a go.’

Phil Bardsley today joined Villa on loan until the end of the season and immediately set his sights on helping Martin O’Neill’s men climb back up the Premiership table.

Phil Bardsley said: ‘I’m extremely excited at this move. It’s a great chance for me to play in the Premier League and obviously get to work with a great manager like Martin O’Neill. I just can’t wait to get started, meet the lads and start training. Martin’s CV speaks for itself and it’s great to get this chance to work with him and his backroom staff. Hopefully I’ll grab the chance with both hands.’

‘I’ve had glimpses of the Premier League at United, but I want to be playing regularly. It’s quite frustrating when you’re in and out of the side, so it’s great to have an opportunity to come to Villa and get a chance to play in the Premiership again. As every young lad will tell you, you just want to play football and I’m no different. I just can’t wait to get started.’

He has been pencilled in for tomorrow nights reserve game against Fulham.
