Martin O’Neill believes that both he and Villa can do enough to persuade Olof Mellberg to sign a new contract with the club.

Rumours have regularly popped up since Mellberg admitted that he wanted to take stock of his options before committing to anything. It is believed that Villa’s performance this season may be the deciding factor in where the Swedish international plays next season.

The Villa boss however fully believes that Mellberg can be convinced to remain at Villa Park, despite reported interest from Serie A giants Juventus.

O’Neill told avfc.co.uk: “Can we get him to sign? Absolutely, I am trying to make an appointment now. We have got this free week and I will be trying to speak to their agents.

‘I will either get them over or get them on the phone and we will see where we are. I am well aware that sitting and talking to somebody, and doing a deal, are two different things.”

The possibility that Mellberg will remain at the club will be good news for Vital Villa editor Jonathan Fear, who has awarded the former captain the “Vital Villa Best Beard” award for two years running.
