Gareth Barry might be targeting a longer unbeaten run (Gareth Barry hunts down 13 ) but Martin O’Neill is refusing to look too far ahead.

The Villa manager said: ‘I don’t want to look too far ahead because I can’t. I’ve never looked that far ahead as a manager because disaster is just around the corner. I’m just back to my old negative self again.’

And on our new owner Randy Lerner the manager is convinced he’s a fan who wants the best for Villa, ‘I think in essence he’s a fan and he wants to do well with the football club, by the football club.’

He also explained, on BBC Northern Ireland’s show ‘Season Ticket’

‘Football was something I’d known all my life and not too be involved in it was quite strange. As time wore on I was beginning to miss the game and as the news was getting a little bit better on the personal front I thought if there was an opportunity to get in at a reasonably decent level then that’s what I wanted to do. The Aston Villa job came up and I was asked to do it and I didn’t have that much hesitation.’

  • Exactly. A great start, better than any of us could have expected, but its important not to get carried away. Theres a lot of work to do to even cement ourselves as a top half premiership side. Years of neglect aren’t going to be corrected overnight.
