Martin O’Neill has hailed the commitment and spirit of the squad after we stormed into the quarter finals of the FA Cup.

Speaking on theOfficial Site following last nights 3-1 victory in the 5th round replay, the gaffer said he was delighted with the display, especially as it may have been excusable for the players to have their eye on the next match given the circumstances.

‘I am happy, it was another big commitment.

‘I’m delighted for the team, they deserved to win the game – although we left it very late.’

We did leave it late, but that actually sounds worse than it needs to. We were in total control of the match, and although Palace made it difficult, by rights we should’ve had the 3rd long before a penalty was needed. Palace didn’t really threaten, it was our errors that gave them openings, and as ever when 1-0 up it was us sitting back that allowed them back into the game.

But we came through it with some style and it should’ve given the players a big boost ahead of the weekend. It might also serve as a timely reminder about taking chances, and NOT sitting back when we have the lead.

So it’s all eyes to the Biggun now – fingers crossed and all that.

O’Neill did admit that some players stayed behind longer than normal for a better check, fuller bath and massage etc no doubt, but at least following today there is nobody new to the worry list.

Another quarter final without adding to the injuries we have is about all we could ask for!
