Martin O’Neill says he will try again for his right-back target come January after missing out on him this summer.

On he explained:

‘In the end, I’d like to have had a natural right-back in the team that we were hoping to get. That’s why I thought he was worth waiting for, for some time. However things didn’t materialise in the way I’d have liked them to have done and I still believe now at this minute that it’s worth waiting for until January time. Nothing’s definite but I’m led to believe from the club itself that something can be done. That was the only disappointment – the rest I was really happy with, getting Zat Knight, Curtis Davies and Moustapha Salifou in late on.’

Seems strange that we weren’t able to get one right-back whilst waiting mind you, surely we need strength in depth? Still, it is results that speak the loudest and our start is good!

He also adds on another link, ‘I saw that we were linked with Lassana Diarra, but I spoke to his agent weeks ago and he always wanted to go to Arsenal. But that wasn’t a problem.’

He insists there is more quality and competition for places after having more time to prepare this summer after the rush of last season, ‘This time we knew we’d be in a better position because we had more time to prepare. At the end of it all, I’m happy with the squad and yes I could have brought in another three players, but I’d have preferred those players to have been of real quality.’

  • Lets hope Man City have a nightmare few months and that the owner is deported. That should then ensure that Micah Richards finds his way into the Villa revolution.

  • Richards are you having a laugh. The only players that have come to you is never has beens and never will be,s. He will go to a big club Man u Arsenal Liverpool or chelsea. Your not even the big in Birmingham.

  • So tell me shoe hammer. What time is your school lunch break over? Not a very good comment considering it is from sombody who supports the 5th biggest club in London.

  • and west ham is a complete *****e hole in one of the worst parts of london that you wouldnt urinate on if it were on fire.

  • Whats the point of this shoe hammer? Still gutted that Harewood left? Or is it that your ex captain is already playing better for us than he ever did for you?

  • Mr Shoehammer, I worked in London for a number of months, and i can say some conviction it truely is one of the worlds true S*** holes. any city that has a cardboard suburb. is a true Dump. congratulations because would’nt pay the riduculous prices you pay for a terrace. Anyway you need to get back to work to pay for the Olympics and the congestion charge you mug hahaha.

  • Shoe Hammer is peeing in his panties at the very thought of the hammering (pun intended) that his little yo-yo club are going to get when they visit VP in a few weeks. London’s afterthought, a third rate outfit, who never manage to stick around in the big league long enough to make an impression.

  • Micah Richards is a Brummie, isnt he? Maybe he will come home too????? Hammers? When it all goes tits up and Bellamy goes to double his wages somewhere else, we’ll have Reo-Coker kicking lumps out of Europes finest and you’ll all wonder where it went so wrong!!!!!!!!!!

  • MON definitely seems to have eyes for only one particular right full back, and if that is indeed the case then all credit to him for sticking to his guns in only pursuing this one particular target. Quality right backs are certainly thin on the ground right now, so presumably we can expect to pay over the odds to adequately fill this position. Oh for a Johnny Gidman out there somewhere. What would Giddy be worth in todays open market?

  • Richards is indeed a Brummie by birth, but he moved to Leeds at a very early age, and does in fact support Leeds United, not Birmingham City.
