Martin O’Neill says he will try again for his right-back target come January after missing out on him this summer.

On avfc.com he explained:

‘In the end, I’d like to have had a natural right-back in the team that we were hoping to get. That’s why I thought he was worth waiting for, for some time. However things didn’t materialise in the way I’d have liked them to have done and I still believe now at this minute that it’s worth waiting for until January time. Nothing’s definite but I’m led to believe from the club itself that something can be done. That was the only disappointment – the rest I was really happy with, getting Zat Knight, Curtis Davies and Moustapha Salifou in late on.’

Seems strange that we weren’t able to get one right-back whilst waiting mind you, surely we need strength in depth? Still, it is results that speak the loudest and our start is good!

He also adds on another link, ‘I saw that we were linked with Lassana Diarra, but I spoke to his agent weeks ago and he always wanted to go to Arsenal. But that wasn’t a problem.’

He insists there is more quality and competition for places after having more time to prepare this summer after the rush of last season, ‘This time we knew we’d be in a better position because we had more time to prepare. At the end of it all, I’m happy with the squad and yes I could have brought in another three players, but I’d have preferred those players to have been of real quality.’
