For the past few weeks, Aston Villa have been the entertainers of the Premier League. Scoring 17 goals in their last 4 outings, the side have come from a somewhat outside position in the table to put genuine pressure on fifth placed Everton and that coveted UEFA Cup spot.

With Portsmouth fading in the league having qualified for the FA Cup Final and Tottenham already ensuring that their position in the UEFA Cup was guaranteed for a third straight season back in February via their Carling Cup win, the pressure has been on the chasing pack for that 5th spot. Last season of course, with a Chelsea Carling Cup & FA Cup double, the spots for Europe went down as far as 7th.

However, it’s different this time around with non-top 4 teams claiming the cups and thus increasing the tension for Europe’s second tier competition.

So a result was vital in their last home match of the season versus a Wigan side who still had not secured their status in the Premier League. But in a shock result, Villa just didn’t turn up and Martin O’Neill admitted afterwards he cannot find a single excuse for their poor display as Antonio Valencia’s second half double ensured the Latics’ future for the next year. Villa fans must now hope to beat West Ham away next weekend and hope Everton take nothing from their last match at home to Newcastle United if they harbour hopes of automatic qualification.
