Gareth Barry, who has been made team captain by Martin O’Neill could be on the verge of a big money deal to keep him at Villa Park.

O’Neill is keen to tie the 25-year-old left sided midfielder to Villa Park after suggestions he might be looking to pastures new.

O’Neill said: ‘Conversations with the likes of Gareth Barry are continuing and I’m hoping that we will be able to resolve that before transfer deadline, one way or the other. I think that he’s got two years left of his contract to run and I’d like to keep him, if it’s at all possible. I genuinely would like to keep him and perhaps it might be the time now to look at maybe extending his contract.’

‘He’s a very, very important player. Not only to Villa at the moment, when he’s of obvious importance, but to the future of Villa. I’m talking about what we want to build on and I want him to be part of that. I’ll be sitting down with Gareth, hopefully very, very shortly and I want to resolve it. The sooner we can resolve Gareth’s situation, the better.’

So go on Gareth, stick around, you know you love the claret and blue!
