Martin O’Neill has spoken to Sky Sports News and says he would be ‘delighted’ if Stiliyan Petrov would commit to a new contract at Villa.

He also says talks are going ‘pretty okay’ but warns ‘Of course, nothing is ever okay until someone has actually signed on the dotted line. But we would like him to stay.’

He says the club are waiting to hear back from Stan’s advisers adding that the talks have been very amicable.

‘It is only just a year ago that people were concerning themselves about whether Stiliyan had a future here. But he has battled back, so much so that I’d like him to be around here for the next couple of years. If every person shows the same determination and willingness and drive that Stiliyan has shown during the last year, it would be brilliant. He has shown consistency and self confidence. He had a lot to overcome and he has gone on to show he is the player I thought he was capable of being. He has shown great character.’

So what is the delay, these talks seem to have been going for a long while now, hopefully there are no problems and terms will be reached!

  • not long back no one would have been at all bothered by this but now he really is doign well and we need to secure him, especially with Barry looking likey (?) to leave in the summer. Funny old game!

  • Got a feeling Barry might stay cos its a world cup year and regular football is what Capello wants!

  • It’s in the club’s best interest to make fans think Barry will go. Then, when Barry realises nobody wants him, he can come out and say “I had a chat with MON, and he convinced me Villa are going places, so I’ll stay” and then the Messianic image is retained!

  • I do wonder what is happening behind the scenes, how long have they been chatting about a new deal, why is he stalling? Hmmm…….

  • Its as asimple as Barry wants to wait till end season to re evaluate, dont always read into things, sumtimes things are simple unlike this post!!

  • Stop kidding yourselves. Barry is off at the end of the season. At his stage in his career he deserves Champions League football and we can’t offer him that. I think he’ll end up going to Arsenal.

  • Id love Petrov and Barry to stay but id also like a couple of younger, pacey centre midfielders who score goals so part of me thinks, if they dont want to commit, let em go…. Both of them could quite easily be replaced IMO. Reo coker would be a straight swap for petrov, unless he jumps ship to spuds

  • I agree with medzy – a Reo-Coker and Sidwell partnership, if allowed to develop well could be very good. Reo (no he is not a RB) can sit back a little to protect the back four and Sidwell can get forward. They are both still young. Throw Gardner (no he is not a RB) into the mix and…dare I say again…Defour and we have an excellent central midfield quartet.

  • Reo Coker has more pace and energy but Reo Coker ONLY has pace and energy. Petrov looks very comfortable on the ball and never gives it away, (something you could never say about Nige.)
Hope that Stan isn’t playing well just because he’s after a new contract.

  • Oh yeah, how is Isiah Osbourne doing – not too long ago people were hyping him as a new Vieira??

  • im glad stan is doing well,he was a good player here at celtic.just needed time to adjust.i think he’s waiting to find out the situation with barry out first.
