Aston Villa have recently been linked with a move for Harold Moukoudi, but the Midlands outfit may be content with their defensive options. Villa recalled Tommy Elphick from his loan spell at Hull City and signed Kortney Hause on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, so now they have four centre-backs at their disposal – James Chester, Axel Tuanzebe, Elphick, Hause.

Stemming the tide of goals is key for Villa now, as they’ve kept only one clean sheet since December 1 and have conceded eight goals in their last three games in all competitions. Dean Smith’s men have shipped two or more goals eight times since November alone and it’s unknown which two centre-backs will be first-choice for the remainder of the season.

Hause struggled on his debut and didn’t earn favourable reviews from supporters, Elphick is struggling to match his Hull City form back at Villa Park and Chester hasn’t looked the same since John Terry resigned last summer. Smith has problems at the back, but it’s hard to see him acquiring a fifth centre-back.

Moukoudi has been a regular for Le Havre this season, making 17 Ligue 2 appearances, but he’s still another young defender who has little experience playing at a higher level.
