Aston Villa, Ipswich Town and Bolton Wanderers have been linked with Macauley Southam-Hales. The defender joined Welsh Premier League side Barry Town in 2017 from Cardiff City and has impressed enough in the last 18 months to attract a lost of interest in January. Whether Villa would a genuine approach to sign Southam-Hales, however, remains to be seen.
The 22-year-old has been converted from a midfielder to a right-back and would find himself behind the likes of James Bree, Alan Hutton and Ahmed Elmohamady if he made the switch to Villa Park this month. In the midfield, Southam-Hales would have competition from Birkir Bjarnason, Glenn Whelan, John McGinn and Mile Jedinak.
Villa might be setting their sights higher in the transfer market too, with Dean Smith being linked with Isaac Hayden among others. Southam-Hales never made an appearance for Cardiff before his move to Barry, but he’s since gone on to make 38 appearances in all competitions for the Welsh outfit.
He’d certainly jump at the chance to go from the Welsh Premier League to the Championship, but Villa may not be the club he arrives at.
