Perfect Response – Villa Gun Down Arsenal For A Double – Match Stats

Given Aston Villa’s overall performance in the defeat to West Ham United in our previous game, there were plenty of worries that fatigue had hit (whether mental or physical) given our packed schedule and things didn’t get any easier today where we faced Arsenal in our sixth game in 18 days.

With Marvelous Nakamba coming in for Douglas Luiz, those worries were quickly answered as striker Ollie Watkins pounced quickly to get on the end of a Bertrand Traore ball to open the scoring just 74 seconds in.

The visitors dominated the ball, but a fantastic defensive display saw us limit them to only three attempts on target, and with eight of our own, we could’ve easily increased the lead.

As it was though, we kept the clean sheet to get back to winning ways and also registered our first top flight double over Arsenal for 28 years (1992/93 – Big Fat Ron). We also now have the same number of posts that we managed in the entirety of last season after only 21 games.

That further shows the improvement we have made this season and we’re still nowhere near being a finished product.
