Stiliyan Petrov has said his success at the Awards Dinner will spur him on further as he tries to improve as a player.

Speaking on the official site today, Petrov was chuffed to bits with his double Player and Supporters Player of th Year Awards, and it probably means more to him than normal given his Villa Park career start 3 years ago.

He also looks upon the awards as being validation and a clear sign from both colleagues and fans that we want the Petrov we saw this season to be his benchmark in terms of average form, but to improve further whenever he can.

‘It’s a big thing, especially for me, after the way my career started at Villa. It didn’t start the way a lot of people expected it to start.

‘I’m really happy I’ve won the two awards. Maybe it puts more pressure on me because next season I have to go out there and show everybody I deserve these two awards. So it’s an even bigger challenge for me and one I’ll accept.

‘I’m glad that the fans gave me the opportunity to win this award and to have the backing of them and especially my team-mates.’

A goal a game for the final two matches from Petrov would definitely be some thank you!

  • Well done Stan. I and Glensider had faith in you all along!!!!! Not like some that frequent this site. I seem to remember a few on here calling for him to be dropped and indeed sold!!!! This just goes to prove class is permanent and form is temporary. Pardon the cliche….

  • Going to be the main man next season when Barry leaves (hope he doesn’t leave). I’ve got every confidence in him. Great season.

  • I have to say after 2 seasons of nothing he has been all we coul want from a player. Good on ya Stan lets do it again next season.

  • Well done Stan, glad you could make it 🙂

No, seriously it does take a while for players coming into the premiership from foreign leagues to adapt 🙂

may you perform for many seasons more!

  • Hopefully when Barry goes this summer Stan can step up the the creative midfield role and add more assists and goals to his game. There’s no point playing well in midfield but not scoring goals a la Gareth Barry….Petrov is such a classy footballer at times. We should play 4-5-1 more often to give him more time to pick out those defence splitting passes

  • P.S im not having a pop at Barry but it definately is time for him to move on. In the 10 seasons he’s been at Villa he’s never really been a constant goals machine from midfield. Tends to be far too quiet in the big crunch games aswell IMO

  • Dont aim higher Stan…Aim lower….SIT…Help the defence and stop playing like you are too good to defend…maybe that will help us rediscover our winning side!
