After turning up to Bodymoor Heath today and enjoying some emotional Birthday scenes, Stiliyan Petrov has said the hardest part of his battle against Leukaemia is behind him.

Speaking to avfc.co.uk, Stan admitted the last few months had been very tough, but he was now feeling much happier and far brighter especially given all the support he has received from fans and the wider footballing world, saying he now believes the ‘hardest bit is over.’

‘I am just not going to stop fighting, I have always been a fighter and I will just keep fighting. I always believed that you need to be patient and you need to believe in things, and I believe I will get better. I know I’ve got a few more months of chemotherapy and I need to go through it, but I think that the hardest bit is over and from now on I just need to wait for the result to be positive.’

As the video above shows, it was an emotional return for Petrov on his Birthday and Paul Lambert confirmed that he will continue as the club captain for the coming season, and Petrov was clearly thankful for all that Villa have done for him since his diagnosis, especially pointing out masseurs Andy Smith and Alex Butler who are cycling from Celtic Park to Villa Park in September to raise funds for the charity Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

‘It’s great what they are doing for Leukaemia research and for me as well. It’s going to be tough for them but they have been working really hard. I said to them if I go in remission and I can do a bit of training I can do one of the stages with them.’

A fantastic aim for Stan to have and one I’m sure all of us hope he can achieve, as news of full remission would be fantastic to hear.
