Shay Given has said Stan can be our inspiration as club captain in our potential (sic) relegation battle, as he still had words prior to Ipswich.
Speaking to The Independent Given explained that Stan had not lost his humour in his battle against Leukaemia, as he politely ribbed him ahead of our Ipswich victory:
‘Stiliyan asked me if I was playing and if I could remember what I am supposed to do. It’s great to see he’s still got his sense of humour. It puts everything in perspective and it gives everyone a huge lift. We know we are in a relegation fight but to see the fight Stan is making is really inspirational. He’s a real fighter.’
That’s what it’s all about isn’t it, perspective. As club captain we all know Stan is still talking the players, especially the younger ones who admit it frequently and it just makes him even more of a top, top man.
He remains in remission which was the first step, but his fight isn’t over yet, and I could speak for everyone here…but knowing the article comments that will follow, I don’t have to do I.
In equally respectful news, The Guardian have Shay Given saying the players would like Stan to lead us out at Wembley should we pass the Bradford test:
‘It would be up the manager who leads us out and it would also depend on Stan. He is still going through some difficult treatments. One day he is up, one day he is down. But the lads would love it if he could and it would be great for Stan.’
He’s our club captain…if we get to Wembley, that is only surely right.
