Mathew Kendrick at The Sunday Mercury had some quotes from Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov this weekend about the Villa’s quest for top four.

Petrov says that top six has been good but now we must push on,

‘Our aim is to break into the top four and that Champions League spot. We are still trying to do it and all of us want to go to the Champions League. We know it`s going to be even harder next year with the spending of Man City and the strengthening of Tottenham and Liverpool as well. We don`t run away from responsibilities. We are aiming for the Champions League and we will see how close we can get to achieving that.’

He says there is the spirit in the team and that there are some good characters as well, ‘It`s up to us to raise our game. We all want to be in the Champions League and I hope we can produce that for the fans.’

He also takes his time to say of the claret and blue army, which as you know is something I always love to read (and hate the opposite when managers/players…. well, especially managers..! have a go at us!) ‘The fans were magnificent last season and I hope they can continue supporting us the way they did last season this season.’

He also acknowledges the transfer window is important and to stay up the top and competing, we’ll need new arrivals.

‘I think we are far away from the Man City money, but I think our manager and our chairman will spend wisely. We have got a very good team and we have been playing together for three or four years now and we are getting better and better each season.’

Amen!
