Reports appear to be confident that Aston Villa are set to seal the transfer of Celtic’s Bulgarian midfielder Stilian Petrov within the next 48 hours. Petrov has made it clear that he wants to leave and it appears that Villa Park will be the midfielders destination.

Reports say the initial fee will be £6million + add ons.

Petrov, who is currently away on international duty with Bulgaria, said: ‘I have stressed my desire to leave on many occasions. It is no secret that I am a close friend of Martin O’Neill and his assistants John Robertson and Steve Walford and I am very glad of their impressive start to the season. Now we will need to wait and see if things work out and I can become a Villa player.’

The 27-year-old who was signed by John Barnes from CSKA Sofia in 1999, played for O’Neill at Celtic for five years. A report in the Independent suggests he will only be allowed to leave if Celtic are able to tie up the transfer of Thomas Gravesen from Real Madrid.

He has scored 56 goals in 228 league appearances.
