Ashley Westwood has said pre match pep talks from Brett Holman and Fabian Delph helped him shine against Sunderland.
Speaking to the Official Site Westwood said he was nervous when Paul Lambert told him he would be starting in midfield, but calming words from team mates settled him down, and fired him up to show us all what he’s actually capable of:
‘It’s always nice to win, the gaffer told me an hour before the game that I would be playing and it took a bit of getting used to. Fabian told me to go out and do what I’ve been doing in training, Brett was sitting the other side of me and he said the same, so that gave me great confidence.’
Westwood adds that Delph told him it was his chance to shine, and make his own claim for a starting place as we move forward, and he hopes he started doing that with his performance.
He also pointed to the players celebrations after the game as proof of the atmosphere within the dressing room.
‘There was a real team spirit and when we went to the fans at the end you could see how much it meant to the players.’
Let’s hope we celebrate like that a good many more times this season!
