One of the more surprising captures by Aston Villa over the summer was former West Bromwich Albion youngster Finn Azaz.

The now 21-year-old midfielder was very much an unknown quantity for fans, and we didn’t even really get a quick look at him as he signed, and then immediately headed out on loan to League Two side Newport County.

It’s been a good spell for the youngster so far as he’s made 12 starting appearances for them across all competitions, with a further three showings from the bench – chipping in with three goals so far, and the last of those came at the weekend as Newport took all three points off Port Vale on Saturday.

A very cute piece of control and a lovely finish that some have suggested is already potentially their Goal of the Season winner, and Newport gaffer James Rowberry was full of praise for him following the game, even going as far as comparing him to former Villan Peter Whittingham from the time they spent together at Cardiff City.

“Finn’s been working hard on that on the training pitch – trying to be more patient in the final third rather than snapping at things – and he really showed his quality. He is showing his composure now, which is key. Finn would be up there but will probably never be better than Peter Whittingham, who is the best technical player I have worked with. He will be close to that eventually, he’s not there yet and has still got a bit to do but he will get there. He is very coachable and very studious with a lot of off-field work on analysis and with his development plans. Eventually he will be Premier League quality, I am sure he will get to that point.”

Be interesting to see what kind of part he plays when he returns over the summer given the praise going his way at the moment.
