Zimbabwe international midfielder Marvelous Nakamba probably hasn’t had the game time he’d have hoped for since he made the switch to Aston Villa from Club Brugge in the summer of 2019.

Having arrived from the Belgian club for ยฃ11million after reportedly going on strike to ensure the move went through, it’s not unfair to say Nakamba’s strengths and weaknesses were almost immediately apparent, and whilst former head coach Dean Smith didn’t rely on him in the way he did Douglas Luiz, new head coach Steven Gerrard may have different thoughts about that.
As our new gaffer continues to adjust to life at Villa, 27-year-old Nakamba looks set to quickly build on his 44 starts (18 substitute appearances) at the club, and he’s definitely proving his worth as a tenacious defensive midfielder, which is better allowing John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey licence to get forward.
With his improved performances this year, and the last two in particular under Gerrard, he’s winning more fans over and for many, he’s now one of the first on the team sheet.
