Aston Villa welcomed Leeds United to Villa Park earlier this afternoon for the pre-Christmas Championship clash and we couldn’t have started the game any better really.

On loan Chelsea man Tammy Abraham opened the scoring five minutes into the first half and Conor Hourihane had doubled our lead inside of the opening 20 minutes. Those were the only two shots we managed to get on target though and the visitors hit back strongly in the second period.

By the hour mark in the game they had drawn level at 2-2 and five minutes into stoppage time they made their greater chances in the game count and had got the winner.

We can only blame ourselves really for the result as we had the match under control, even if they were creating more and had a greater threat.

Speaking to the BBC following the fulltime whistle, a frustrated Smith explained.

“Going 2-0 up in a game like this, you expect to see it out, especially at Villa Park. But they’re the best side we’ve played so far and we got punished for our defensive lapses. It’s happened too much. And it has reared its ugly head again. They were probably better than us but a draw was a fair result. Instead, it’s my first defeat at Villa Park and it’s a hard one to take. From their celebrations, I thought they’d actually won the title.”

Onto the next one now and hopefully a return to winning ways and far better performances once more.
