With Premier League football now back, Aston Villa are winding their way to the end of the 2019/20 campaign and all eyes are on survival and avoiding the drop after what has been a predictably difficult season given all the summer changes we saw.

Plans for next season will already have begun, and plenty depends on what division we find ourselves in, but there are some decisions that need to be taken ahead of time and it’s extremely likely that it won’t only be Callum O’Hare and Matija Sarkic who move on at the end of the month.

Having loaned in Pepe Reina (AC Milan) and Danny Drinkwater (Chelsea), their deals at B6 come to an end on June 30 but given the Coronavirus delay to the year, there was a question as to whether we would look to extend their loan deals to see us through until the final game and speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash with Drinkwater’s parent club, head coach Dean Smith confirmed that we are looking to do that and he expected answers next week.

Would You Extend Reina & Drinkwater's Deals?

Yes, Bench Warmers

Yes, Bench Warmers

No Chance

Quoted by the Birmingham Mail, our gaffer explained.

“We have until next week. I believe they are in the process of being agreed. We will find out if they get the paperwork done in the next few days.”

No doubt this decision will split the fans. Reina had a decent start but massively tailed off with errors prior to the game being paused, and Drinkwater has unfortunately created more off-pitch headlines than on-pitch moments of joy for us – so when it comes to spaces on the bench, we might as well throw some young lads on and at least give them the experience of being involved and let them know there is a real pathway through to the team for the future.
