Martin O’Neill says, if they can complete the loan signing of Liverpool and England U21 goalkeeper Scott Carson, that Villa will have a ‘hungry’ player this season.

The keeper will have a medical today before completing the move after getting the blessing of Rafa to leave.

O’Neill has told the official site:

‘It would be a good move for all parties and I’m excited at the prospect of adding a hungry player to the squad. Scott could have settled for a place on the bench in Champions League games this season and, who knows he might have played in some big, big games. But he is a hungry player who wants to be involved on a regular basis and I know he’d come in here to fight for a starting role. That’s the sort of desire I want at this club.’

‘He did very well at Charlton (where he spent much of his time on loan) last season and Liverpool’s initial reluctance to let him go this summer is a clear indication of how much they rate him.’

Meanwhile the Liverpool gaffa Raffa admitted he didn’t want to let him go but decided to allow the switch explaining:

‘We don’t want to stop his progress.’ Adding ‘I could tell Scott to stay here, but he could be the future keeper of the national team and we really don’t want to stop his progress. I am happy with the situation and for Scott to play regularly somewhere else. We do not want to lose him, certainly not sell him because we are very happy with him. He is a good lad and a very promising goalkeeper. But I can understand his need to maintain his place in the England squad. It will benefit him to be out on loan and for us to sign a new goalkeeper, then we will have three keepers all in action.’

Be interesting to see, if Sorensen gets fit for the Newcastle game, who will start. You would assume that Carson isn’t coming to Villa to swap one bench for another. If he can help us achieve Europe this season, it might well prove a canny bit of business, we can then take Jussi for free next summer if Liverpool still don’t want to sell Carson. See, this management lark, it’s easy!
