Looks like Villa might have got one step closer to securing the new England No 1 Scott Carson – well, he is set to start for England v Austria and surely has to do very little to impress in order to keep Paul Robinson of Spurs out, as he has never been the same since he left Neighbours in the 90’s!

According to reports today, Liverpool boss and master of rotation is willing to sell the keeper Villa took on loan last summer. He had refused before this to contemplate letting the highly rated 22-year-old keeper go.

Carson has replaced Thomas Sorensen, who looks set for a January exit and has since kept five out of 10 clean sheets.

Rafa Benitez, who is doing a very nice impression of a dwarf Tom Jones at the moment with that goatee said: ‘You can understand that he wants to play. He knows Pepe Reina is top class and that it will be difficult for him to play here. Scott is a good professional and a nice boy. This is a crucial time in his career and he needs to play. At the moment we are concentrating on our own team and our own competitions, but Villa can decide if they want to keep the player.’

The fee the papers keep mentioning is around £10million which would make him the most expensive keeper in Britain, which is nice…

Carson said his England amibitions are clear, ‘To be the England number one, that is the target. There is no point in me sitting around settling for what I’ve got. I’ve got to try and keep climbing the ladder, work hard and hopefully I’ll get my chance for England and show that I am up to standard. I don’t think there is a big gap between all the keepers from Robert Green, Chris Kirkland, David James and Robbo. I don’t think there is a massive gap. You’ve just got to keep working hard and hopefully get to that next level which is being the England number one. It’s what you strive for.’
