The Daily Star today claim that may be after Real Madrid left-back Royston Drenthe.

Name sound familiar? Well, it should, we were strongly linked with him when he was at Feyenoord.

The report claims he is seen as an ideal replacement for Nicky Shorey who they believe will be sold this summer with a number of championship clubs apparently interested… not for the £5million or more we paid they won’t be. Must admit, not that my opinion matters one jot..!… I can’t see what is so wrong with Shorey, in fact I think when he’s had his chance to play, he’s been more than ok!

Back to the report. Real Madrid are apparently having a massive clear out, as we covered yesterday in the transfer rumour thread (re-listed below), and the 22-year-old Dutchman could be just one of the players sold to

The price would apparently be around £6million, they paid £10million for him just two seasons ago.

The paper say: He has made just 38 appearances in two seasons and was booed by fans last season after some poor performances.

What else is in the papers today relating to Villa? Not a lot to be truthful, there is more confusion over Spurs midfielder David Bentley as covered by Vital Villan this morning. Full details: It’s Not Good To Talk

The Guardian have again linked Villa with Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas who is apparently seen as the man to replace the departure to Manchester City (just to confirm, who aren’t in the Champions League this season!) Gareth Barry.

So the others apparently available from Real Madrid according to The Guardian: Arjen Robben, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Klass-Jan Huntelaar, Wesley Sneijder, Rafael van der Vaart, Royston Drenthe, Javier Saviola, Gabriel Heinze and Mahamadou Diarra. Maybe we should bid for them all?! I’d go for Nistelrooy for one, Heinze would also make sense. Sod it, lets go with my first suggestion, we’ll buy the lot!

Dion Dublin meanwhile has told the Birmingham Post ‘I was at Villa for five-and-a-half years and the fans get frustrated because they know the potential of the club is huge. The players Villa have got at the moment are good enough to achieve. The manager Martin O’Neill knows better than anyone else who he needs to bring in. He will probably say he needs four, five, six players and some people will agree with that. I don’t think he needs too many.’

Curtis Davies has told Sky Sports he expects the manager to bring in a handful of new players.

  • Don’t think you can go wrong in buying a decent Dutch player. I also think Shorey did well towards the end of the season. Always good to have competition for places though.

  • Mf of Young, Sidwell, Petrov, Milner – with Bentley floating in and out to provide though balls and the like with Petrov holding the midfield and protecting the defence will alow Sidwell and Bentley scoring opportunities…add a striker and a defender to that list and we’re cokking on gas. Roque or Bent please. Hangelaand and Micah Richards please.
