Gerard Houllier has praised the team for digging deep in our derby victory over the Boggies today, and admitted that the 3 points were a big relief.

Speaking on the Official Site after our 2-1 victory lifted us to the dizzying heights of 13th place, Houllier said the whole camp felt relieved at the final whistle and the win should result in the boys having far more confidence when we face off against Wigan.

I don’t think the relief is confined to the players to be honest, the final 10 minutes were a nightmare and even more so once Albion got their consolation, as it really did look like they would draw level.

But 3 points in a derby is all that matters, especially with how our season has been going so far.

‘The victory gave us the feeling of relief. I think the defeat at Liverpool hurt us, more by the way we lost rather than the score.’

As for the response and the game itself, Houllier was pleased with the way the players stepped up and battled during the game.

‘I must say I was pleased and proud of the attitude. When you’re going through a bad patch, you need to be more focused. I was very proud of their response.’

Is this where our season starts to come together, the turning of the corner moment? Wigan will be equally as tough a match, and I doubt it’ll be very pretty but it’s another game we simply cannot afford to lose.
