Summer signing and skipper Micah Richards has said he’s very confident that the wins will come for Aston Villa this season as he felt there were plenty of improvements on show in the recent loss to Chelsea and plenty of positives we could take.

Ignoring the obviously errors and everything we couldn’t take from the game – like points.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, Richards said that he felt there were encouraging signs from our performance even though we clearly need to do better defensively and provide more of a clinical threat up front and he wants us to make that improvement and get the three poins when we face Swansea this weekend.

‘We started very well on Saturday. We watched a lot of videos on Chelsea the previous week. We knew how they played. And I thought we set up really well. The manager got us pressing high, keeping a high line. I thought the midfielders and striking department were very good. I thought Jack was outstanding, Gilly was getting into pockets, Rudy was up working hard. I think if we’d have nicked a goal it would have been a different game but it wasn’t to be.’

Richards said that for him, up until the point of their first goal going in – especially the manner of it which hit everybody – he felt we were the better side on the day and we’re playing with confidence, but of course a mix of a howler between Guzan and Lescott from nothing – well there’s not much point in denying it affected said confidence with how we played after that point is there.

‘Up until the first goal we were probably the better team. We played with a lot of confidence. I know the results have not been what we’ve wanted of late but to put in a performance like that against Chelsea is encouraging. The fans were brilliant from start to finish too. I think they saw us put in a big effort. That’s all we can do. And the results will come. I’m positive about that. We just have to keep working hard and we’ve got to look ahead to that Swansea game now.’

Following the Ayew face off this weekend should one of our Jordan’s be selected, we then face easy trips to White Hart Lane and Tottenham and then Manchester City, and Richards knows ahead of those tests it’s important we give ourselves a boost next time out.

‘Once that first result comes, it’ll give us that little bit of confidence to get another. We’ve got a tough run in the league now – Swansea, Spurs and Man City. They’re not coming any easier but that’s the Premier League and that’s why we’re footballers. We want to play in the biggest games so we look forward to them.’
