Manager Tim Sherwood has waxed lyrical about his first ever signing – Micah Richards.

The 26 year old comes to having tasted success at Manchester City before it turned sour after injuries, and he spent last season on loan with Fiorentina before being officially released by them over the summer.

Boasting 13 England caps, more than 200 career appearances as well as having played in the Champions League, as well as winning the Premier League and the FA Cup, Sherwood explained to the Official Site that he felt his best years were ahead of him.

‘I’m really pleased to get Micah on board and I’m sure he will prove to be an excellent signing for the football club. Micah is a winner. He helped Manchester City win their first Premier League title in 44 years, has won the FA Cup and has played in the Champions League. So we are signing a player who is used to winning football matches. I want players with that winning mentality here. And we are also signing a player at his peak.’

With Richards known to be capable at either centre half or full back, Sherwood was also convinced that he could more than work his way back into England contention during his time with us, and that would only be of benefit to the player and the club.

‘Micah has played international football for England in the past and if he performs as well as I know he can for Aston Villa then there is no reason why he can’t get back to that level again. Tom Cleverley’s form at the end of the season for us got him back in the England squad so Micah knows he will get a platform here to push for that. He is a player who can play in a number of positions. He can play right-back, centre-half and also in a three man defence so his versatility is another real positive.’

Sherwood went on to say that he was also impressed when they spoke because Richards really has a desire and determination to get his career back on track in England.

Certainly the right type of target and I remember from years gone by that for many Richards would’ve been a top target for strengthening us during our own better days.

Hopefully he can recapture that form, and he will have learnt a lot more since the last time we saw him, so hopefully a good fit on all levels.
