RIP Tommy Cummings

The club have announced today that former manager Tommy Cummings has passed away at the age of 80.

Sunderland born Cummings, as a player achieved legendary status with Burnley, appearing in 432 First Division games at centre half after making his debut in 1948. (479 games all in).

He is still 5th in Burnley’s all time record appearance list, and could further boast 3 England B caps, an FA Cup Finalist and Championship Winner amongst his achievements. Not withstanding his goal against Newcastle United in 1952 which is still described as one of the finest ever goals seen at Turf Moor.

Cummings started his managerial career at Mansfield Town achieving promotion with the club in 1963 from Division Four. He started his time at Villa in 1967 but left 16 months later as Tommy Docherty arrived.

After leaving Villa he returned to Burnley and entered the pub trade before full retirement.
