Room For Improvement From Gabby Agbonlahor

Ashley Young has been sticking up for his teammate Gabby Agbonlahor backing the Villa striker to end his drought.

The wing wizard told the Press Association:

‘Early on in the season everything that Gabby touched in front of goal was going in but also you get runs where you can’t find the back of the net. No matter however hard you try and however hard you work, it sometimes just won’t happen for you. But it will turn for Gabby. You’ve just got to keep getting yourself in the right positions and I am sure the goals will come again soon.’

Adding, that Gabby has proved he is a ‘top striker’ by breaking into the England squad.

He also admits Villa need to ‘regroup’ for the last eight games calling each one ‘massive’ with the goal obviously being the Champions League at the end of the season’s rainbow.

He didn’t say rainbow though, I made that bit up, call it poetic (pratt) license if you will….!

I must admit I always used the argument that as long as Gabby is improving season-on-season, I could see little reason to criticise him until it was pointed out his scoring record is pretty stagnant. I do so hate losing arguments!

2006-07:
League, 37 appearances (1 as sub) 9 goals
FA Cup, 1 appearance 0 goals
League Cup, 3 appearances 1 goal

2007-08:
League, 37 appearances, 11 goals
FA Cup, 1 appearance 0 goals
League Cup, 2 appearances 0 goals

2008-09 (so far):
League, 29 appearances (1 as sub) 10 goals
FA Cup, 2 appearances 0 goals
League Cup 1 (as sub) 0 goals
UEFA, 8 appearances (1 as sub) 1 goal

Not great for our front line striker really. He has to push on now or surely see his place under threat by much needed new recruits?

John Carew has 7 league goals in 10 games (9 as sub), 1 goal in 2 games in the FA Cup, 0 goals in 1 League Cup game and 3 goals in 4 UEFA appearances.

In comparison that is 11 goals in 17 games compared to 11 goals in 39 games.
