A short time ago tonight, Aston Villa announced the signing of free agent Chris Samba.

Former Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers defender Samba had been without a club having left Greek side Panathinaikos in January 2017 and he of course joined us for training on a ‘we don’t call it a trial’ basis last season.

Having stuck with us so far this pre season and been involved in our training camp, playing his parts in friendlies against Telford and Walsall, manager Steve Bruce today handed him a 12 month deal.

Speaking to the Official Site after signing the deal this evening.

‘I have enjoyed my time with Aston Villa and I am very pleased to continue this association after signing my contract with the club. I have played against Aston Villa many times and it`s always been a club I have had the utmost respect for because of its standing in the game.’

Samba went on to say.

‘I can`t wait to put the shirt on this coming season. It`s a big season as everyone knows and if I can play my part in making it successful, I will be very happy.’

Welcome to our new 33 year old.

  • Looked really good in the friendlies,His hard work has paid off. glad we have took him on.

  • Fair play to Samba for grafting so hard to win a contract with us over the last 5 or 6 months. Many players would have thought they were above that and walked away. 5 players in with PL experience and hardly spent a penny.

  • Good decision as long a short he is not on huge wages and we are able to flick Richards and Elphick. All we need to do now is re-sign Shane’s Given Andy we will have reunited the full cast from Dad’s Army! Maybe we could turn their theme song into a terr

  • 50+ players now on the books ,are any ever going to be released let alone sold . American Football anyone !

  • Four good centre backs now in Terry, Chester, Baker and Samba. Baker can play on the left when Taylor is out, and we have Hutton, Bree and DeLaet on the right. To me that makes Elphick (nice guy but not good enough) and Richards (useless) utterly expendab

  • Good idea marlin. Who do you think you are kidding Aston Villa, if you think were old and done, we are the boys who can up your little game, we are the boys who can make you great again, so who do you think you are kidding Aston Villa, if you think were

  • I hope Bruce knows what he is doing. If we do not have a solid top 3 place at the end of november then it is goodbye from him.

  • Being saying defence NOT the problem and I think midfield will be OK with the experience we have now its the forward line thats a huge problem, Kodjia as long as he’s fit and playing, all the others have to step up and start to score consitently , Hogan ,

  • Tend to agree with you Eddy1. However, we do need to get rid of some of the ‘deadwood’ again – we seem to say this every summer, but do we….. No!

  • Having all these players on the books that nobody wants is because we bought them when nobody wanted them and we bought them in the first place. Meanwhile all the talented young players on the books go backward in the pecking order. It’s a total disgrace.

  • I guess for free, if wages are reasonable and IF we can clear out a few other players, and IF he can remain fit AND IF he’s interested (he’s moved around an awful lot) then this might prove worth it.
