Aston Villa’s summer transfer rumour mill spiked into a new gear a couple of days ago as it was being claimed that we were now very close to securing a deal for Bayer Leverkusen attacker Moussa Diaby.

A short time ago this evening, Villa officially confirmed the arrival of the 24 year old ten capped French international, although we have naturally not stated the fee nor his contract length. The earlier speculation had suggested that it would likely be a five year contract, the transfer structure could mean it was potentially worth around the 60 million Euro mark.

His move remains subject to international clearance and a work visa, however, they won’t be an issue and he has already linked up with manager Unai Emery and the Villa squad as we are already on our pre season tour of the United States.

Having begun his career with hometown club Paris Saint-Germain, he made the move to Leverkusen and the German Bundesliga back in 2019 and given both his domestic, and European performances, for the side since then, he has been linked with potential moves to many big name clubs, especially as he chipped in with 14 goals (across all competitions) last season alone.

If it is true that he turned down a big money offer from Saudi Arabia to truly give himself a fresh test, that will only ingratiate him more with the fanbase.

It looks like it might well be a very interesting coming 2023/24 campaign, but the biggest question now is who next?

I imagine we’ll hear from the man himself tomorrow.
