Score Line Was Harsh – Lambert

Yeah, Norwich probably feel the same but nobody cared then so why should they now? Manager Paul Lambert gives his after match spin.

Full interview is available on the Official Site.

For those who haven’t got a lot of time, re-arrange the words:

Harsh….couldn’t fault the effort….we had chances….we go again….disappointment….

Once you’ve done that, and it can be in any order, you’ll be close enough to knowing what the gaffer said and you’ll either agree with him, or disagree, but at least you’ll have saved some time.

For those with a little more time to burn.

‘I don’t think there was much in that.’

Apart from the four goals in their favour.

‘The scoreline was pretty harsh on us. We started great, looked good, had plenty of the ball and looked threatening.’

Lambert goes on to say we then scored a ‘terrific’ free kick through Ashley Westwood but went and conceded a ‘poor goal’ to Wayne Rooney.

‘But he can do that…’

Football players generally can I find.

He doesn’t however have any complaints whatsoever about the penalty we conceded, describing it as a ‘clear’ decision for the referee to make, so at least it’s not his fault which is nice.

‘We came out second half and Christian has a really good chance. I won’t be critical of him though, because he’s scored vital goals for us.’

Benteke did have a few chances on the day and in larger attributable comments I’ve read, Lambert goes on to say that had we taken those chances at that stage the score line would’ve been different and so could have the result been, but he backs Benteke to score more important goals for us and it’s ultimately just one of those things.

Maybe if others in the team scored and we weren’t so focused on Benteke or else in our tactical awareness, they’d have the chances to, the pressure would be off him and when he’s having a bad day we wouldn’t look so inept.

‘Overall, we were definitely a handful. I always felt we could get something out of the game.’

The after match buffet?

There is a second penalty issue in the game though and Lambert says he hadn’t at the point of giving the interviews watched a replay back so he couldn’t really comment, but he’s been told they are usually given.

With only a few games left now, the gaffer says he’s not set the team a points total because ‘if you don’t hit it, it becomes disappointing’ so presumably we continue to aimlessly target the team above us and when we don’t get to them that is less disappointing.

There were positives though, apparently we can take a lot from the game, but surprisingly he doesn’t list what they actually are. Presumably as he keeps talking about how ‘much of the ball we had’ he might have changed his mind on possession now, but given it doesn’t count when you don’t win, and he hasn’t confirmed possession is now important – I can’t see that as a positive because it doesn’t count.

Bet you wished you stuck with the short version now don’t you!

I’m beginning to wish I had.
