Tottenham’s Daniel Levy believes he can get Jack Grealish for £15million if you go by what the Daily Telegraph say. Of course, under normal circumstances, such a number would be considered derisory and we would dismiss it out of hand, but considering the financial issues, there will be vultures circling looking to exploit the situation.

We are not holding any of the cards, that is for sure, and we can’t expect rival clubs to feel sympathetic to our problems, so in that sense, such lowball offers are entirely expected.

However, setting a precedent for selling our prized asset for such a paltry figure would not only shatter the morale of what is an already de-moralised fanbase, it would leave us exposed to other clubs wanting to sign our other stars on the cheap.

At the moment, our financial state in the medium to long term is unclear; a fire sale may be the only way to balance the books, but we should not be exploited by other teams. Players like Grealish have a market value, completely separate to our club’s economic situation, but that won’t stop teams trying to take advantage.

Like every other supporter, I don’t want Jack to leave but I’m being realistic, there are few players who can be sold for big enough numbers to help us get through this mess. James Chester would be one other and perhaps Jonathan Kodjia. Legend Dennis Mortimer says it looks inevitable that we’ll have to sell, and I’m inclined to agree with him.

Hopefully, if the Telegraph report is true and Levy is in the hunt for our no.10, £15m is just an opening gambit. He is a notoriously tough negotiator and you only have to look at his negotiations over the sale of Toby Alderweireld to United to know that.

What will certainly go in our favour is that there is a lot of interest in the midfielder. It is believed that Newcastle, Leicester, Arsenal, Manchester United and West Ham are all looking at him now, and perhaps that can push his price to at least double what Levy would be looking to pay.
