Here you go folks, more and in depth thoughts from manager Tim Sherwood ahead of the FA Cup Final against Arsenal this weekend.
The full set is carried by the Official Site.
Whilst talking about our need to respect Arsenal, their threats and the fact he believes them to be the ‘best footballing side’ in the league, Sherwood said that a lot of it was belief from the boys when it came to causing an upset and the only way we can do that is by being positive, and going at them as we won’t achieve much if we just try and sit back and defend.
‘It feels good to be involved this weekend. We are excited at the prospect. We know it’s a big occasion. To be involved in an FA Cup final is a fantastic achievement for the football club. It’s a one-off game. Form goes out of the window. Everyone has a chance to make a name for themselves. The club haven’t won a trophy for a long time so it’s an opportunity for everyone to write the history books again. I thoroughly believe we will get a performance like the one we put in against Liverpool. You have to believe that. Hopefully we can nullify Arsenal’s threats and take the game to them. That’s what we intend to do.’
Sherwood went on to say that clearly Arsenal were the ‘favourites’ given the season they have had, and of course they are the current Cup holders having won it last season so he knows it’ll be difficult, but the good things in life often are.
‘It will be very difficult for us. But we’re not going there to make the numbers up. We aim to give them a good game. I know what the boys are capable of and they have proved that in this FA Cup run. On the big occasions they have produced the goods. They need to do it one more time.’
As for the underdog status, it’s nothing new in his mind and it’s something we should relish because it takes the pressure off and for him since coming in, those games especially have been some of our best performances.
‘I think we’ve been underdogs all season. The games – when pressure has been on us – we’ve actually produced – away at Tottenham, at Wembley against Liverpool in the semi-final, that huge game we had in the FA Cup against West Brom. We managed to put in good displays and they have been good enough to get us victories so I’m hoping we can do that again. This is an opportunity to pick up another trophy for this fantastic football club and for the players to put themselves in the history books. There’s a hero in that dressing room somewhere.’
He went on to call on the fans to ‘enjoy the day’ and promised that our aim would be to be back at Wembley in August for the Community Shield – giving us a shot at Europe again can’t be dismissed with a win.
‘We want to make sure we’re back there in August for the Community Shield because that means we’ve won the FA Cup. Then we have a European campaign to take care of as well. I want them to enjoy the day and believe. We need to believe in that dressing room and on that pitch. There’s nothing wrong with believing. We know we’re going to be the underdogs but we quite relish that fact. We’ve pulled it off by staying in the league and we need to pull it off by winning the FA Cup. We are not going to win it by not passing the ball. We need to move the ball around the field and get our expansive players on the ball in areas of the field that can hurt Arsenal because we can’t just look to nullify. We need to nullify Arsenal’s threats with our own.’
As for our opponents more specifically, he went on to say.
‘I think they’re probably the best football team in the league. If you let them play, they can hurt you. They have players who can win a game by themselves. They are a top, top football team. They have proved that in the Premier League over many years. They are obviously the holders of the competition too. Arsene Wenger believes in his philosophy and he doesn’t sway from that. He sticks to his beliefs. I know exactly how Arsenal will play. I admire him for sticking to his guns. They have an opportunity to win another trophy. We have to make sure we stop them.’
