“Since Dennis Mortimer” – High Praise Indeed For Villa Star After Norwich Efforts

|

Following Aston Villa’s performance against Norwich City at Carrow Road last weekend, plenty of our players have come in for good praise from both fans and pundits alike, and Academy graduate Jack Grealish was no different following his own individual performance on the day.

With the 24-year-old scoring his third goal of the 2019/20 campaign last Saturday, he’s already chipped in with three assists as well (across all competitions) as he continues his own adjustment back to life in the top flight, and with continued improvement, BBC pundit Garth Crooks named him in his Team of the Week selection and compared his ‘appetite’ for the game as being akin to European Cup winner legend, Dennis Mortimer.

“It has not been an easy journey for Jack Grealish over the years but he seems to have found his destination. To captain Aston Villa in the Premier League is no mean feat. Villa are a big club. Grealish was outstanding away at Crystal Palace and he led his team to victory against a Norwich team that was demolished by a rampant Villa. I have not seen a Villa captain with such an appetite for the game since Dennis Mortimer, who played for the club between 1975-85 and skippered them to the 1982 European Cup.”

With plenty of pundits making lazy comparisons when it comes to Grealish and how we fared back in his first spell in the Premier League all those years ago, it’s good to see him get another win and his goal to rub out some of those pointless stats.

Jack also found himself in Whoscored’s Team of the Week, where he was joined by Conor Hourihane and Wesley, so doesn’t matter which way you look at the weekend, it was a good one.
