With Alan Hutton’s contract coming to an end over the summer, his long association with the clubs (with plenty of highs and lows and issues with explosives under one manager in particular) came to an end and with the 34-year-old remaining clubless at this point of the season, he’s turned his hand a little more to punditry and he’s started featuring on the newsfeeds a little bit more in recent weeks.

His latest offering has seen him discuss the relative merits of our loveable Meatball – John McGinn.

With the bizarre £50million transfer speculation over the summer with reported interest from Manchester United, given how he’s adjusted to the top flight so far in 2019/20, given his age and talents, we all know clubs will be taking note of him now and Hutton has backed him to have a really good career in the upper reaches of the table.

“I think he could go to a top-four side, he’s got everything. You just have to watch him – he’s infectious, he’s such a good guy, such a nice guy and so grounded that that makes you want him to do well. In the summer I heard that those (top-four) clubs could be sniffing about him so it doesn’t surprise me one bit. If he keeps going the way he is, the sky’s the limit for him.”

With plenty already commenting on how quickly McGinn impressed at Villa following his snip £3million arrival from Hibernian, Hutton added that he did surprise the group when they saw what he could do on the Bodymoor Heath training pitches.

“No disrespect to anybody but they probably didn’t know him inside and out because if you’re playing down south and you’re from down here, are you really watching Scottish football? Probably not. I think they would be surprised at how good he was and how well he has taken to the league.”

Given 24-year-old McGinn can and will only improve further with experience, he’s already on his way to being a legend for plenty I would imagine.
