Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith has now held his usual pre-game press conference ahead of this weekend’s Championship clash with former manager Paul Lambert as he brings his Ipswich Town side to Villa Park on Saturday.

With most eyes on the game itself as Villa look to turn around our recent poor results and get our promotion hopes back on track, with just under a week now remaining in the January transfer window, the topic of squad strengthening obviously featured in his questions.

Speaking to the Official Site on Thursday afternoon, Smith admitted he was still on the prowl for players who could improve us and although defence is obviously a priority, he’s looking at all areas of the pitch.

“We’re looking at some defensive options as well as other parts of the pitch as well. I am in constant contact with Christian and Suso – looking at players, looking through scenarios and Suso has got many plates spinning all the time. We’re looking to add to the squad at the moment.”

I’d imagine most fans will think that answer was obvious when you look at the squad but the bit that caught my attention really was.

“The future of the football club has to be getting players who have potential so we can raise some market value with these players, too. We want players who want to develop and get better and probably lower the age group of the squad we have at the moment. I think that’s something we will try and recruit during this window and the next window.”

An end to high earners looking for a final payday and a turn to younger potential that can benefit us on the pitch and then our bank balance.

Been a long time coming.
