New Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith was paraded in front of the media yesterday following his appointment at the club and as you can imagine the new gaffer covered a variety of topics.
Obviously, the lack of balance in the squad with our threadbare defence came up in the questioning but he was saying the right things and he was confident that not only could we cope with that moving forward, he also didn’t feel it would hamper his attempts at getting greater ‘intensity’ out of the players as he looks to stamp more of an attacking style on them.
It’s certainly going to be an interesting run of games up to the New Year where he’ll get his first real chance to wheel and deal with the group and with CEO Christian Purslow’s words about Financial Fair Play giving everyone a boost, it might be a more interesting January than we first expected.
No point running before we can walk though, but whether he’s just trying to build confidence or is happy with the players he inherits, we’ll soon find out.
The Birmingham Mail had him saying of the group.
“It’s a fantastic squad full of quality, the players at our disposal and the firepower. We probably look a bit unbalanced at the back at the moment to be honest, with only a couple of centre backs at the football club. But all in all I’m really happy with it.”
Given the vast majority of fans know we have the quality to play a far more entertaining brand of football, I have no reason to disbelieve him. It just depends on how quickly they take his ideas on board and start playing like we know they can.
