25-year-old goalkeeper Jed Steer had a 2017/18 season to forget with injuries limiting him to just four appearances across the campaign.

He’s actually only made eight appearances for us since his arrival from Norwich City but he spent a good spell out on loan with Huddersfield Town twice, Yeovil Town and Doncaster Rovers during his time at the club.

With Pierluigi Gollini heading out the door and Villa getting no payback for training up Sam Johnstone as he joined West Bromwich Albion the other day, he is technically our only senior stopper now. Mark Bunn is supposedly out of contract and had been on our released list but he’s training with the side out in Portugal so I’m guessing he’s staying as well.

Having dislocated his shoulder in his last appearance for us, Peterborough in the FA Cup last January, he’s now back out on the pitch building himself back up and with money tight at Villa Park this summer, Steer’s early promise between the sticks leaves him incredibly well placed to make the spot his own, get his Villa career really and up and running and give manager Steve Bruce one less headache as he looks to build a squad that will have to at least challenge for promotion next year, regardless of what goes on off the pitch.

Have posted the above Tweet to his account over the weekend, some fans are backing him to confidently step up this season.
