Thomas Sorensen says Martin Laursen has a battle to force his way into the team with Olof Mellberg and Liam Ridgewell doing so well.

Sorensen says of the former AC Milan player who has recently completed games against Reading Reserves and a full 90 minutes v Lincoln City (in a behind closed doors friendly):

‘Martin is really doing well and now he needs some games. It is a big victory for him just to be on the bench. Three or four months ago it looked like he was heading for January before he could return. He is well ahead of schedule. With a few more reserve games under his belt, Martin will be ready to play in the first team – but it will be hard for him to get in with the way we are playing at the moment. Olof Mellberg and Liam Ridgewell have done really well and Gary Cahill is still to come back. In a couple of months time there will be a real battle for those places in the team.’

I can’t see Laursen having to wait too long to get back if he remains fit, he is obviously a quality player but at least we now have some competition for places, makes a very welcome change!

  • Cahill looks a quality defender in the making, he has composure on the ball also. Log head (Ridgewell) is a bit more of a bread and butter player but seems to do a job. For me Laursen has to play as we paid a bit for him and never got a return – Ridgewell

  • No problem for us at centre half, we have cover. Sorensen on the other hand needs to look over his shoulder?

  • Sorensens warning should be heeded. Ridge is playing out of his skin, and fully deserves the starting position he currently holds. Gary Cahill really looked the real deal towards the end of last season, and will no doubt be chomping at the bit to win back
