Spurs Late Rally Breaks Villa’s Battling Hearts – Match Stats

|

So the big day finally arrived and Aston Villa took to the pitch against Tottenham Hotspur in London as we made our return to the Premier League after last season’s Championship Play-Off success.

The starting XI selected by head coach Dean Smith certainly ruffled a few feathers on social media and some of the meltdown was quite comical but all that mattered was the game, our performance and the result.

With four competitive debuts, fans were also looking for how quickly some of our newbies would adjust after pre-season successes.

Naturally, we were second best for most of the game, and Spurs were that touch quickly, but we had heart, organisation and whilst against the run of play, we thoroughly deserved John McGinn’s opener. Spurs finally drew level late on in the game but with some seriously pathetic refereeing decisions on the day, I’m left very encouraged by our overall performance. Tom Heaton, Neil Taylor, Bjorn Engels and Tyrone Mings deserve special mentions – but they are far from alone.

England striker Harry Kane did predictably get one the scoresheet, and then a second, to send the points in their direction, but as a learning curve, plenty would’ve been taken on board. But our season won’t be defined by how we do against the big boys.

We will improve, we will get up to the pace but I enjoyed that. There were plenty of positives for me, and what we need to improve on should be obvious to all.
