French keeper Steve Mandanda is apparently in talks with Aston Villa over a potential move.

Le Harve’s 22-year-old keeper, who is of Congolese ancestry, was named in the French U21 squad for this summer’s European Championships and is due to fly to Birmingham next week to discuss a move.

Le Havre have also claimed that Mandanda is being tracked by a number of clubs both across France and abroad.

A rough translation of what is on Le Harve’s website is below, although Vital Villa cannot vouch for it being completely accurate.

Le Havre goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, who is highly-regarded by several French and foreign clubs and whose departure seems inevitable, could move to England.

Aston Villa (Premier League), Steve Mandanda and Le Havre are currently in talks aimed at coming to an agreement about the possible move of the keeper.

Steve Mandanda will go to Birmingham next week as part of these discussions.

No denial or confirmation from Villa yet, but the fact this is reported on Le Havre’s official site gives it some weight in my opinion.

Stay tuned for more news as we get it.

  • Anyone else find it incredibly funny that a French guy of Congolese decent is called Steve? HAHA.

  • pretty accurate translation…shame about the picture on the Le Harve website…just has the ball flying past him into the back of the net!

  • If he was only a squad player for the French U21’s then I would prefer us to be in talks with whoever kept him out of the team.

  • I just hope Steve Mandanda wears a bandana and he smokes cigars that come from havana.

  • been a top site this since I went on holiday. Bad news is, I’m back. In fact, with the cloudy skies, very bad news indeed!!!

  • Hello. I am a season ticket holder and attend to all matches in Le Havre, and I’ve been a Villa supporter too all my life. Steeve Mandanda is a young and very promising goalkeeper, who has been approached by the likes of Marseille, Paris and Chelsea in recent weeks. He’s been kept out of the U-21s squad as France didn’t qualify for the U-21s’ Euro Championship (England went instead) and their manager is now preparing a new squad, with younger players in order to prepare for the next qualifying campaign…and Steeve is far better than the current U-21s goalkeeper! To have him as cover for a few years would be great, but I am convinced he could well become 1st choice rather soon. He’s sheer class..Up the Villa!

  • Nice one delirium with the inside track..all quality players greatfully received..UTV

  • Well there we have our own inside info from Monsieur delirium. As I know nothing of French football, Le Havre, or Steeve Mandanda I will keep relatively quiet on this one. Suffice to say though, that we do need new keepers here at Birmingham B6, and quality keepers that are available seem to be very thin on the ground.

  • TS under pressure cant be a bad thing, at least if we get a keeper who is worth his salt he will be able to fill TS boots if the unthinkable happens and Injurys strike like they did last season.

  • Off the subject. Just heard Bellemy has gone to WHU. I reckon this means Mon was never in for him. I wonder what striker he will be in for! For me Bellemy is a good player but not what we needed. What we do need is someone like Owen who is a proven and consistant goalscorer at all levels. Nice to dream!

  • A couple of days hardly seems enough time to weigh up whether or not he’s good enough to bring on board. We do need a young back up keeper though, but no doubt MON has his eyes focused on someone immediately capable of seriously challenging, or even replacing Tommy S.
