Stiliyan Petrov says he would love to be the new Villa captain after the departure of Gareth Barry and sad retirement of Martin Laursen.

The 29-year-old Bulgarian, who only recently signed a new four year contract at Villa, said it would be an ‘honour’ to lead the team out.

‘The captaincy of Aston Villa is a great honour. It’s a great club and one with a long tradition and fantastic history. It’s great to be a captain and to lead the team out. People say that the captaincy doesn’t make a difference, but it certainly does.’

Petrov won the player of the year at Villa and also on Vital Villa…!

He has featured in two recent wins on our Vital polls. The one was for our player of the season:

  • At least somebody wants the bloody thing.Being Aston Villa captain is becoming the equivalent of being drummer for Spinal Tap.

  • Petrov gets my vote every time. Great attitude and excellent footballer. No one deservs it more IMO

  • I think if Stan got it i reckon it could even get him scoring on a regular basis, he could well be our Frank Lampard, he just needs to be really up for it and hungry and i think being captain could give him that.
