Survival, Then Rewards

Paul Lambert has said a number of players could be rewarded with improved terms, but that won’t happen until we secure survival.

The names mentioned by the various papers covering these quotes tonight, list the obvious Christian Benteke and Andi Weimann, but also include Matty Lowton and Ashley Westwood.

Now obviously Weimann is the odd one out being out of contract next summer, so I would presume moves are already afoot to secure his future regardless of our league status, but it makes perfect sense to wait and keep the players focused so wage increases are now clearly based on merit and achievement only – that will be a big message and something for every player to strive for.

I’ve taken these quotes from the Guardian.

‘There’s a few of them that you would think ‘yes, he’s done great’, and Matty’s definitely one of them. But there’s no point in doing that yet – we’ve got to get over the line. That’s the thing – we’ve still got goals to achieve – but it’s something at the end of the season that you would look at.’

Lambert also confirmed that he would be fully involved in contract negotiations this summer, and categorically stated that despite press reports saying we’ll do a Ba with Benteke and let him build in a figure based release clause were nonsense.

‘I don’t think you can put any figures in because it just creates problems, it’s not something I’ve ever thought about with him.’

Well said, I agree, goodnight everybody.
