Following on from a semi reasonable loan spell out with Solihull Moors in the 2020/21 campaign, Cameron Archer exploded into life at Villa Park in the 2021/22 season, where former head coach Dean Smith gave him some good time in the Aston Villa first team.

Having impressed plenty of fans, especially with goals against Barrow and Chelsea, he earned himself a loan move to Championship side Preston North End that January. It was a productive spell with seven goals returned in 18 starts.

He didn’t have the best of times under Steven Gerrard (neither did we in fairness), but following the arrival of Unai Emery, on Friday morning, the club confirmed that Archer would now spend the rest of the campaign back out in the Championship, with Middlesbrough.

The move went through in time for him to make his debut for the side as a second half substitute in their FA Cup defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon.

Hopefully he starts finding the back of the net on a more regular basis.

In other Friday news, former Rangers youth Rory Wilson has now signed his first professional Villa contract having made the move to us last summer. He came to Bodymoor with a great reputation having scored 49 goals for club and country last season, and having continued his form with us and in our U18 and U21 set ups, it’s a just reward.

Academy manager Mark Harrison said of his deal.

“We are delighted to see Rory sign his first professional contract. We have all been really pleased with his development since he has joined us, which has now seen him involved in the Under-21s on a regular basis. Rory has continued to score goals at all levels since he joined us in the summer, and we look forward to watching him develop over the coming years.”
