Teddy Sheringham has dismissed the newspaper reports that he nearly joined Villa as utter rubbish and has assured the West Ham fans he is 100% committed to the Hammers.

The 40-year-old former England striker explained:

‘I was having a conversation with a reporter after the game on Sunday and was asked about the possibility of signing a new contract at the Club. I jokingly remarked that, had he asked me that a few weeks ago when I was left out of the squad of 16 for our match against Aston Villa, then I would probably have told him that I was considering retirement.’

‘It was just another way of saying that you never know what is around the corner in football, but at no point did I ever mention the possibility of Aston Villa being interested in signing me. How they have turned those comments into such a story is beyond me, and I would just like to make it clear to our supporters that the whole thing is complete rubbish.’

FFS, some of these reporters need a kick up the proverbial!!

  • Funny MON never came out and debunked the story also, particularly as he was reportedly telling the media that Chris Sutton could in effect be our Teddy Sherringham.

  • I think the trouble for managers these days is if they have to deny every story, they would be talking to the press all day. He might also know Teddy as he’s been in the game so long and could have been waiting for clarification from the player so as not

  • Erm, “some of these reporters …”?? Are there ANY that don’t need a kick up the proverbial? Do we know any reporters that don’t make up stories to suit themselves?

  • Like the saying goes, The only thing worse than being talked about is NOT being talked about. After being unfashionable in the media Villa are now being linked to players again a refreshing change from the we’ll have to sell first to afford to buy. Optimi

  • we dont need him his too old i believe he will go to tottenham and villa will sign keane or defoe or both we have sutton who should be with us for another 3-5 years hopefully
