I think the reaction of most Aston Villa fans when news began surfacing of Manchester United’s apparent interest in bidding £50million for Scottish international and Player of the Year John McGinn, was simply to laugh.
That reaction certainly wasn’t a comment on the 24-year-old’s talents and since then we’ve rightly tied him down to a new and improved five year deal, as we all know how important our little Meatball is to us.
With Villa kicking off their return to the Premier League on Saturday against Tottenham Hotspur, McGinn himself addressed the speculation and what he thought of it. Speaking to the Daily Record, it seems his reaction was the same as ours.
“I had a little chuckle at it. I’m sure a lot of people did. Certainly the gaffer and the players here had a bit of banter about it at my expense. It is up to me to go and prove it is justified. At that point my whole mindset was on Villa and being successful here. I was speaking to my dad about it the other day. You always dream of playing in the Premier League, but to do so playing with such an illustrious club as Villa, that is when you pinch yourself. You are playing for a cause and what people believe in. People live and breathe Villa, it’s what they think about for most the week.”
A good response by him, and shows despite last season’s achievements and impact, he’s still got his head screwed on straight and he’s certainly capable of proving he can play for the top six sides given his work rate and quality – but we’d all prefer him to stay here and get us into that position.
I love the pivot away from United there and back to Villa.
