Former England and Aston Villa manager Graham Taylor has labelled the FA’s selection policy for the next England manager as ‘pathetic’.

GT said: ‘I think the whole selection process has been absolutely pathetic. It has not been professional – I don’t think it has been good at all. You have to say that egos entered into it.’

Adding:

‘What really irritates me is not knowing who is actually doing the selecting. If the FA bosses are talking about setting up a form of continuity – a ‘football team’ to make sure the next manager has experience – they already have that in Steve McClaren. What we are seeing is that some of the public and the media don’t want McClaren. It would appear not everyone is in agreement at the FA.’

Vital Villa have come to the rescue and sorted out the selection process for the FA. We did a poll last week asking who should be the new boss and are now ready to unveil him!

Disappointingly from my point of view 40% want a manager who can hardly speak English as Phil Scolari was the favourite choice. Next up was Big Sam Allardyce, currently at Bolton, who got 23% hotly followed by Martin O’Neil with 21%. The reason O’Neil got such a low vote is that many Villa fans are on their prayer matts to get some divine intervention leading to the arrival of the former Leicester City and Celtic boss at Villa Park.

Holding up the rear so to speak were Middlesbrough boss Steve McLaren on 5%, Charlton manager Alan Curbishley (whose name keeps being mentioned in connection with the possibly soon to be vacant managers job at Villa) with 4% and A.N.Other with 7%

  • Sven is bad enough at times, surely to motivate players correctly for big games you need everyone to speak the same language?

  • My wish has always been to see Martin O’neil, speaks english can handle the media and the big time players, understands the english press, no contest.

  • Agreed, O’Neil would be great, but I’m still dillusional and think he’d be better at Villa. England manager for me is Big Sam.

  • oneil is the only selection for me, mclaren would be a puppet, big sam would rub too many people up the wrong way, big phil cant speak a word of english!, and curbs has never reall proved himself to be anything more than an ok league manager!

  • Fear …. because he’s good! Simple as that! Let’s face it most of the England players’ English ain’t that good either!

  • Oddly enough, the FA delegation landed in Portugal less than 30 minutes after this article was published. Wish I’d had a bet last week!

  • Big Phil will sign a pre-contract this morning, 27-94-06. Another foreign England manager. However he won’t have such a colourful private life as the present one.

  • If it is to be Big Phil, that free’s up Curbishley for a managerial switch this summer to another premiership club. Thats all we need at B6, the arrival of Curbishley.
