The EFL have now announced the Match Day officials that will take charge of the Championship clash between Aston Villa and Wigan Athletic this Saturday.

Aston Villa face Wigan Athletic in our second game of the 2018/19 campaign at Villa Park on Saturday, August 11.

With a solid three points secured from our opening day clash last Monday against Hull City as we took a much needed 3-1 victory to boost spirits further after a difficult summer and our eventual takeover, we certainly go into this game with hopes of further improvement and a repeat of the scoreline but Wigan are on a high having gained promotion themselves last term so it won’t be an easy match by any stretch of the imagination.

The game kicks off at 3pm and here are the people we can blame if it all goes wrong.

Referee: Jeremy Simpson
Assistant Referees: Shaun Hudson and Nick Hopton
Fourth Official: Mark Heywood

We now turn to Vital Villa’s resident refereeing expert sirdennis for his unique insight into the appointed Official.

After the routine win on Monday night that was relatively uneventful in terms of refereeing buffoonery (apart from the ridiculous yellow for the Scottish Cafu for daring to celebrate his first ever goal for us) we now have our first home game on our newly laid and super posh pitch.

Many fine players will grace the pitch this season – all ours of course – but the one thing that will sully it is the appearance of our old “friend” Jeremy “Jezza” Simpson.

I did notice he was the 4th official on Monday and I wouldn’t have trusted him to hold the board up properly and it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if this clown will do his utmost to get in on the act tomorrow.

He simply can’t help himself and we should be prepared for a whistleblowing display of utter incompetence.

SirDen is as confident as ever then.

Simpson got through his first game in 2018/19 without showing a single card but before we get too carried away with that, in 42 games last year he showed 167 of the yellow things, with ten red things.

He was a regular go-to for the EFL when it came to us as he oversaw matches against Norwich (1 card to us), Bolton (1 yellow, 1 red to us), Sheffield United (0) and Cardiff (4 to us). We did take 12 from an available 12 though so maybe that’ll be a blessing?

He didn’t hurt us as a fourth official on Monday so two game involvements in two, let’s make it two wins from two and get him off to a flyer!
