Imagine the cost of some of those players now? Hard to leave Dennis Mortimer out of this (and how he was ever left out of the England squad will always be a mystery) but have to say, not a bad team at all there!

Aston Villa owner Dr Tony Xia has rubbished the speculation linking on loan Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone with a January switch to West Bromwich Albion.

Reports emerged over the festive period that West Brom were interested in the player and reports stated that they would be in discussions with United about recalling him so they could sign him on a permanent basis. Read more: Johnstone’s Going Nowhere – Xia




Time for the special computer that crunches the numbers to determine the final Championship positions for the season of 2017/18. Last season the Octopus feature was a late arrival for the Championship – it was off having its tentacles given a Brazilian for all I know. Then again I still don’t know why I call a number crunching supercomputer an Octopus but some things are probably best left unasked. Crisis? What crisis? ‘We`re only a week away from a crisis at Aston Villa. Everything is a crisis if we don`t win.’ So proclaimed Steve Bruce (not for the first time) after our abysmal performance on Boxing Day at Brentford. To be fair to Steve, he qualified those remarks but suggesting the fans were within their rights to complain about poor performances. ‘That`s why we`re a big club with a big history and big tradition. We`ve got a loyal support and they rightly vented their frustrations and feelings tonight.
